CEBU is called " The Queen City Of the South"

Cebu regained lead as top RP

AFTER ranking as the second most visited destination in the country in the second quarter this year, Cebu regained the lead position in the next three months.

In the third quarter, the province received 566,278 foreign and domestic tourists, which is 239,451 more than the number posted by Camarines Sur, the most visited destination in the previous quarter.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) attributed this increase to the opening of new tourism destinations, products and facilities.

The agency also cited increased flight frequencies of major airlines from Manila and other islands in the Visayas and Mindanao to Cebu and the expansion in air access to major tourist markets, including China.

DOT records show that Cebu has the highest number of domestic and foreign visitors in the third quarter this year. Within the period, the province received 163,175 foreign tourists and 403,103 domestic tourists.

Camarines Sur, which went from first in the second quarter to second in the following quarter, recorded 59,433 foreign and 267,394 domestic tourists.

Cebu’s total visitors from January to September reached 1.24 million, reflecting a 1.8 percent increase from 1.21 million visitors in the first nine months last year.

On the other hand, the total number of tourist arrivals for Camarines Sur from January to September is 1.3 million, which shows a 124.6 percent increase from 547,194 visitors in the same period last year.

The DOT attributed this to Camarines Sur’s major events such as the International Kite Boarding Competition, World Wakeboarding Competition, Ironman Run and the International Dragon Boat Competition.

The other most visited destinations in the Philippines within the first nine months of the year were Boracay (558,401 visitors), Baguio City (530,706 visitors), Davao City (514,611 visitors), National Capital Region (436,558 visitors), Zambales (246,429 visitors), Bohol (238,745 visitors), Oriental Mindoro (215,755 visitors), and Palawan (195,134 visitors).

During the first nine months this year, the number of domestic tourists increased by 21 percent to 6.5 million, while foreign arrivals increased by 2.7 percent to 1.5 million.

“This performance positioned the tourism industry for greater growth in the fourth quarter,” said the DOT in a statement.

The DOT is seeing a brighter year ahead, especially after the Philippines was recently included in National Geographic’s list of 25 Best New Trips for 2010.

The government agency also cited the World Travel Market’s tourism barometer, which showed international tourists arrivals to have declined in all world regions in the first eight months of 2009. The same report, however, also shows that Asia and the Pacific showed “the clearest signs of improvement with growth already positive.”

Historic Cebu was where the Portugese Captain Ferdinand Magellan planted the Cross of Christianity in 1521.

Strategically lying at the center of the Visayas, Cebu has been a popular entry point among merchants through the centuries.

The last three decades saw the blossoming of Cebu into a booming tourist destination.

Touted as the ultimate playground, many leisure enclaves have risen throughout the province, taking full advantage of the enviable sun-and-sand-and-mountain location.

Arguably the country's diving center, scuba divers find Moalboal, Sogod, Pescador, Santa Rosa Islands and Boyong Boyong in Mactan as prime dive spots. World-class resorts fringe the islands, serving both divers and plain tourists alike.

Modern shopping malls, fine dining restaurants and lively entertainment centers, includingg two casinos and sprawling golf fairways, add luster to Cebu's landscape, offering the tourist a surfeit of activities to engage in.

Other points of interest include: Magellan's Cross, Cebu's most significant landmark; Basilica Minore de Santo Nino, a courtly ancient church which houses the oldest religious image in the country; Fort San Perdro, formerly a Spanish Garrison and now a park-cum-museum; Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills, where people go for worship and fortune-telling; the mountain town of Busay, Cebu's flower basket; and the old town of Carcar, resplendent with antebellum architecture.

Cebu is now considered the most important trading and commercial hub outside Metro Manila. Strongly entrepreneurial, Cebu is a sophisticated metropolis with the charms of an island destination. Shopping, dining and entertainment complement the other facets of the Queen City of the South: a world-class export industry for such products like furniture, gifts, toys and fruits (mango), special economic zones, IT Parks, central business districts, educational and medical institutions all help to make Cebu one of the premiere cities in Asia.

Today, Cebu leads in traditional and non-traditional exports and has the highest economic growth rate anywhere in the country. The people of Cebu are known to be pioneering and innovative businessmen. Cebu International Airport in Mactan Island facilitates comfortable and easy movement for travelers. The number of weekly international flights to and from Mactan is constantly increasing. To date, Cebu has regular direct international flights to Singapore, Hongkong, Narita (Japan), Kota Kinabalu, Seoul and Qatar. There is also a steady stream of chartered flights from Incheon, Taipei, kansai, Nagoya and Kaoshiung.

Cebu has a relatively moderate climate that makes it highly attractive tourist destination. It is blessed to be at the center of Negros Island, Leyte, Bohol and Samar and other various Islands that cushion the impact of bad weather conditions, the reason why Cebu is very rarely affected by strong typhoons. While Luzon areas as well as Samar islands down to Mindanao are battered by strong winds during typhoons, Cebu in most cases remain calm with tolerable winds and weather conditions.

Identified by Asiaweek as one of Asia's best cities, Cebu's quality of life has kept pace with its growth. Needed infrastructure and utilities, especially, power, water and communication have been put in place. Commuters in the metropolis rely on computerized traffic management system. Housing is also adequate and reasonably priced.

Major attractions are Cebu's numerous historical sites, such as the Magellan Shrine. One is within minutes of any of Cebu's abundant attractions: five-star hotels, casinos, white sand beaches, world-class golf courses and shopping malls. For those who prefer the rugged outdoors, there are four National parks for hiking, climbing and the like.

Come and savor the spectacular and wondrous beauty of Cebu, your virtual paradise and Queen City of the South.
